Poor Air Quality: Disrupting Health And Increasing Illness!


Because the majority of Americans spend over 90% of their time indoors, breathing clean air is imperative to our health. Many times we’re breathing in contaminated air and we don’t even realize it — indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than our outdoor environment!


What is indoor air quality?


Indoor air quality is the air within homes and businesses and how it relates to the health of those who occupy it, and when you can control and optimize common pollutants within, you can improve your health and reduce your risk of air quality related health concerns. 


The concern with indoor air quality is that it’s unseen so we can’t really tell when and if we’re being affected, but it has both short- and long-term effects to our health when we’re exposed. 


Short-term effects – If your home or business is contaminated with common pollutants (more on those later) it can impact your health just after a single exposure. Common symptoms include:


  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Irritated eyes, nose, and throat


Long-term effects – If you’re exposed to indoor air pollutants over the years, long-term health difficulties can include:


  • Respiratory concerns
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer


What makes poor indoor air quality so sinister is the fact that symptoms could be attributed to a host of things, and most don’t even consider the air they breathe as a cause.

What causes poor indoor air quality?


There are a variety of factors that affect indoor air quality and common sources include:


  • Tobacco products
  • Fuel from appliances (gas or wood burning stoves)
  • Chemicals from home goods (paint, furniture, cabinetry)
  • Household cleaners
  • Personal care products
  • HVAC issues
  • Moisture
  • Radon


The most important thing to consider is the quantity of any single source and how long its been affecting the air. For example, air fresheners, paints with VOCs, and mattresses can all leach pollutants continuously while smoking and household cleaning products are more infrequent. 


Faulty Ventilation


Inadequate ventilation is another factor that impacts indoor air quality. When your home or business is buttoned up tightly with no air flow, this can cause an excess of pollutants to buildup and expand within the dwelling — the pollutants buildup with nowhere to escape! 


This is why there is some benefit to venting your house occasionally. In houses with older windows, typically wood-framed, they naturally let the house breathe a little bit because air is able to escape. 


Newer windows, however, are sealed so tightly for energy efficiency (which is great) that no air comes in or out. Whatever your window situation is, air out your home by cracking windows and doors a couple of times throughout the month.
