Action Steps For Clean Indoor Air

It’s important to first assess your home or business and then tackle any indoor air quality concerns you currently have. Below are specific action steps for both your business and home.

Step 3: Building Specific: Inform And Educate Building Staff Members

Once indoor air quality issues have been identified, it’s important that all building personnel is made aware of the issues and that there is a clear line of communication. Typically, assessing indoor air quality isn’t in training, as it’s just something that people are trained to think about. However, their perspectives and knowledge could be very helpful — these are the employees that know the ins and outs of the building and once they’re made more aware of what to look for, can help identify additional indoor air quality concerns.

It’s also critical to keep an updated list of businesses that impact indoor air quality, businesses such as HVAC, pest control, cleaning companies, etc that all personnel can refer to.

Preventative maintenance steps for HVAC:

  • Inspect outdoor air dampers for contamination
  • Establish that the air dampers are clear and unobstructed
  • Inspect the HVAC checking for clean filters, drain pans, and the heating and cooling coils
  • Inspect the humidity and moisture controls
  • Inspect and clean the cooling towers
  • Schedule yearly HVAC inspections

Step 4: Home Specific: Reduce Indoor Air Quality Hazards

While walking through your home and assessing what may be a source of poor indoor air quality, there are some key factors to consider that will help any homeowner improve their air.

Store paint, varnishes, and other chemicals in a shed or an area away from your home (including an attached garage). Believe it or not, the chemicals you store in your attached garage significantly add to indoor air pollution.

Look for “green” or better options to home furnishings. Carpet, vinyl flooring, furniture, paint, and other home furnishings are notorious for leaching toxic fumes into the air — consistently. Off-gassing happens long after the initial smell goes away and will continue to pollute the air. You can find low-VOC or VOC-free paint, and natural materials such as wood, stone, and metal are all excellent alternatives.

Use natural cleaning products. Household cleaning products and just about anything you use to improve the look or smell of your home typically have toxic chemicals in them. Have you ever cleaned your shower and had to crack a window or turn on the bathroom fan because it was hard to breathe and you felt dizzy? These are the fumes that contribute to poor indoor air quality. Products with synthetic fragrances also contribute to poor air quality, so if you love spraying air freshener, you’re essentially harmful toxins into the indoor air! Instead, look for products that are scented with essential oils and more natural cleaning products such as vinegar and baking soda.

As a home or business owner, it’s important to take action and create an indoor environment that is safe, and this includes indoor air quality. Improve your wellness when you identify, prevent, and manage the factors that may be polluting your indoor air.
